Spoil That Mommy!

Hi Chums,

As Mom's Day rolls around again I think back to last year's. It was just perfect.I got exactly what I wanted: a day to my crabby self, prowling the streets of my city toute seule.

I've never been a big one for all that MD gimmickry but now that I'm a crabmommy I'll take all the appreciation and worship I can get. This year promises to be a goodie since my mother-in-law is graciously flying in to watch Crabkid for three days while Crabhubby and I take a train to Seattle. I have never been to Seattle but it just a few hours from Crabcity, that being Portland, OR. I am most excited to travel by train; trains are so much more dignified than cars. Although you can't argue as much in them so that is definitely a con.

Anyhoo. In anticipation of MoDay, I have guest-posted a series of my ideal presents over at Etsy. Because it is not enough to be childless and carefree for a few days of Seattle. It is not enough to have my mother-in-law go out of her way to ensure this break for the Crabparents. I want more. Always.

Do stop by and help these great vendors of vintage and handmade fabulosity. Its just astonishing how gorgeous Etsy's loot continually proves to be. Mothers, treat yourself or your mom or grandma to a dear little pair of vintage earrings or a cactus in a vintage lusterware pot or whatever your mommy soul desires. Or send your spouses and boyfriends and polyamorous partners over to the site in support of you, O wondrous selfless mommy-creature, you!

The only sucky thing about guesting at Etsy is that I get all bitter and annoyed that I cannot have it all, every last bit of it. My face gets all pinchy and sour as I pick out the products and then it turns pink with covetousness and then green with envy as I picture those who can actually buy any trinket they wish off Etsy, any day of the week. Then my face turns purple with rage. Just sharing!

Enjoy, my dear mom-friends. And do tell me, what do you want most of all for Mother's Day? Please don't answer "hugs and kisses." Those kinds of answers are not welcome on this blog and will be removed by my site administrator.

I want a long day alone. Just me and my pina colodas. Or my book. With no responsibilites for the entire day. Ahhh, solitude!

Who are you trying to kid? There's no site administrator! Just you, the laptop and tampon wiener dog.

I have to say, that my favorite MD gifts have been the 'interviews' given to the kids by their preschool teachers. A Series of nosy questions about mom with many a hysterical answer by the tots.

Q - What does your mom like to do?
A - Clean, clean, clean

I was so proud of that kid, he could have said, "watch tv and sit on the couch", but he didn't. He told a BIG FAT WHOPPER for his mummy's reputation and that my darling CM is my idea of a great MD gift.

Jealous, I want you as a guest poster!

I found Etsy's just recently. Very cool stuff over there. When disposable income is on the rise again . . . I'll be back and buying.

I want to get away for a weekend. Just me, no hubby, no kids. A massage, a mani and pedi, a facial, some cocktails, a yummy dinner, and some magazines and books. That would be heaven.

MK,
Ha! That's a good one --clean, clean, clean! I didnt know you were so good with the vacuum. I think he should have answered "blog, blog, blog"!

Okay all this etsying aside, even my crabbymom heart melts when I see those little kiddie projects with scrawly writing saying "I lik my mam" !! A little note makes the perfect MD present. Especially when complemented by a day of vintage stores and some etsy loot. :)

We'll get a guest swap happening...

On mothers day I want a day off from being a mommy. No kids (that includes the husband kid), no responsibility, no decision making, no interuptions, nocooking, no cleaning, no no NO!
Just a day of being me, that's if I can remember who I am when I am not mommy.

I agree with the solitude thing and the pampering/reading/etc time...but has anyone EVER tried to seriously ask for that? I'm wondering since I think such a request would insult and injure all those kids--big and little--in my care. Anyone have any experience with this one?

would also love a day of solitude at a spa!

Anon,
In my case my child is still very little so mostly it was about asking my husband for a day to myself. He was very willing. He totally understands my desire for some frivolous time to myself and I do the same for him when he needs a break from family life. Last year we all spent a cuddly morning in bed, then Mom went on her adventures and my daughter and her dad had their own fun time together. She had a great day and even helped her dad decorate it for a nice dinner they made which we all enjoyed on my return.

To me it seems obvious that as human beings, no matter how much we love our families, a little time to oneself is a luxury that you have every right to ask for. In my life alone time is in very short supply as I have no family nearby --so we are all together all the time, without a day at Grandma's here or there. I have no problems teaching my child that it is important for all people to be by themselves sometimes...She needs to see me as a person independent from my role as mother. I think it's very healthy. Obviously this is all predicated on the child in question feeling loved and secure to begin with but if a mom is reluctant to take one single day to pamper herself with some alone time, then I'd say she has more than earned it.

'Hugs & kisses' from Clive Owen prior to him ravaging me senseless for a week.
Daniel Craig could even join in and make it a threesome if he wants....
If you insist on deleting the 'hugs & kisses' bit, that's all right, they can bite & lick me instead..Yum.

So I can picture this properly, would that be together or taking turns?

Once respectably: it truly is hard to choose between Daniel Craig and Clive Owen. I'll leave it there.

Last MD I wrangled the two giblets x-country from Nova Scotia to Yukon Territory. Ahhh, the fond memories... 22hrs of travelling alone with a 2.5yo and 10mo and, hey, only three stopovers!

This MD finds me plunked in NS again while hubby refinishes the basement up north. All I can hope for is an hour of sleep while my parents fill the kids with Boston Cremes at Tim Horton's.

What I really, really want is an afternoon in a hammock listening to the loons. And lots of liquor.

For mother's day, I got a craiglist hutch, new curtains and slipcovers!

On the actual day of mother worship, I just want some crispy peppered bacon and english muffins and fruit and to lay in bed all day.

I love Etsy too, those were some great picks!!

On one of my past mothers days I was having a long lovely soaking in the bath when my 5 year old came to the bathroom door and said 'there are two men at the door called Norman who want to talk to you'
I said 'tell them mummys in the bath and cant talk to them right now'
My 5yr old came back shortly and said 'they said to tell you that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you'
I said 'tell them thank you very much but mummys still in the bath'

Yep, solitude. And I'm getting it too, cause hubby and one of the kids are going away for the weekend. So I'll only have one teenager home. And he doesn't like to hang out with me anyway.
And hubby informed me that my mommy day's present was being delivered by UPS and that I was not to even LOOK at the box. This is much better than my last birthday, where HE got a new cell phone and I got ZIP.
Great blog.

Kate,
that is absolutely classic.kellyache, woolies, little lovables and everyone else, hope you get exactly what your hearts' desire--a smidge of peace and quiet, peppered bacon and assorted treats as well as perfect behavior from all offspring.

I have three young kids, struck by various pestilences this month. So a day with no vomit, no lice, no pus and no snot would be absolutely lovely. And no one asking me to wipe their bottom. I'm fantasizing about a large hotel room, room service, and a book. Or three.
